FIVE DIMENSIONS OF HEALTH

In order to know how to maintain a good health, we must get to know the dimensions of it and how do they work. They are the core elements of Health!

Dimensions of health consist of 5 elements: Social, Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual. A complete picture of health is provided by all of these five dimensions of health and with the change in any of the dimension, other dimensions are directly or indirectly affected.

Dimensions of Health

The components like fitness levels, functioning of the body, number of diseases present, etc comes under Physical health. To be precise, physical health is said to be healthy when there are no signs or traces of diseases as well as injuries. According to my perception, physical health is the most important aspect among the dimensions of the health, as one cannot afford to control the other aspects of health up to their full potential unless they are physically fit. Being physically fit leads to mental well-being & healthy social life.

The ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships with family, friends, colleagues and the people around us is known as Social health. From Dawn to Dusk we find ourselves surrounded by fellow humans, which is inevitable & essential at the same time. As we co-exist, we should maintain peace & harmony rather than violence & ignorance. If a person is socially unhealthy, he feels isolated & unwanted, which in turn leads to the rise of depression as the person is deprived of physical activity.

Mental health is basically related to the functioning of brain & cognitive abilities of a person. It is linked to Emotional health. It is a physical illness of the brain that causes disturbances in thinking, behavior, energy or emotion that make it difficult to cope with the ordinary demands of life. Research is starting to uncover the complicated causes of these diseases which can include genetics, brain chemistry, brain structure, experiencing trauma and/or having another medical condition, like heart disease.

Emotional health is all about the emotions of a person, which is often associated with the hormones. It depends upon the mood of a person, his feelings & the ability to control them. Having a poor emotional health or mental health gives birth to depression, anxiety & trauma. Emotional & Mental health are interconnected. Any ups & downs in either one of them poses the hazard of drowning in depression which further leads to suicide.

Spiritual health refers to the sense of overall purpose in life. People usually associate their purposes with belief or faith. Some people create their own purpose. It boosts people to stick to their goals and achieve them. And they feel content & organized with the purpose without any ambiguity & keeps a person healthier. Spiritual health affects the two dimensions of health mentioned above. It helps people to overcome hurdles and to maintain a good social health because they gather as congregations, greet & support one another.
